Essential Digital Skills for Students

Most study and work now involves a computer, so a handful of digital skills pay off every day.

First, document skills: writing and formatting a clear document, using headings, and keeping files organised so you can find them later. Second, spreadsheet basics: entering data, using simple formulas and making a clear table or chart. Third, presentations: telling a story with a few clear slides rather than filling them with text.

Next comes online safety: strong, unique passwords, careful use of links and attachments, and thinking before sharing personal information. Finally, search and evaluation: knowing how to look for information and how to judge whether a source is reliable.

You do not need to learn everything at once. Pick one skill, practise it on a real task such as a school assignment, and build from there.
